Speaking during an interview to a local TV station, Kioni explained that attendees at the recently concluded Limuru 3 meeting settled on Uhuru because of the respect he commands across the political and cultural leadership of the vote-rich Mt Kenya region. Kioni acknowledged that both leaders from Kenyan Kwanza and Azimio held Uhuru in high regard despite their political and ideological differences. On the other hand, he also stated that Uhuru had previously held the highest position in the country and served as the president for two terms

The former Ndaragwa member of parliament explained that the organizers of the highly anticipated conference had faced opposition from some political quarters but managed to stage a successful meeting. According to Kioni, the organizers drew a list of expected attendees who turned up, making the Mt Kenya political event live up to its hype."We had intended to hold the meeting and we held it. The people we expected to come came and we achieved what we wanted to achieve," Kioni stated. During the meeting, the organisers who include Kioni and Azimio la Umoja Principal Martha Karua launched an umbrella outfit dubbed Haki Coalition. The coalition is made up of 26 political parties from the Mt Kenya region which attended the conference. However, Kioni insisted that all other political parties will be allowed to join the coalition irrespective of their political affiliations. While launching Haki Coalition, Kioni named former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Mt Kenya community leader. "We now have an umbrella body dubbed Haki Coalition, it will bring all parties in Mount Kenya together and we will be speaking in one voice," Kioni announced.
"He has already left politics and we want him to sit with us and discuss our issues. He has already become a President and our leader, why wouldn't we give him the position?" he posed. Nonetheless, he maintained that the former President did not offer himself for the position, clarifying that the attendees of the meeting were behind his selection. Kioni also added that a meeting would be organised with Uhuru in the coming days so that the organizers can present the memorandum from the meeting.
